Responsibilities

JOB MISSION:

As Innovation Designer, you will create innovative product solutions and design statement level products that meet the category’s innovation direction. Be responsible for researching, ideating and designing performance products by balancing functionality, aesthetics and engineering.  Be well rounded in all areas of the New Balance business including performance product including on field, on track, or on street.

 

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Work from verbal descriptions, brainstorm sessions, or marketing briefs to communicate design intent through various mediums: sketches, renderings, 3D modeling and hands-on prototypes.
  • Meets key deadlines for projects and have a solid understanding of the product creating process and timeline.
  • Redefine footwear visuals and invent new process, materials and constructions through experimentation and have the ability to complete through commercialization.
  • Work closely with the engineering team and the Sport Research Lab to create functional prototypes and specifications to investigate feasibility of ideas and new technology to support the innovation pipeline.

 

KEY CUSTOMERS:

Meet the needs of the innovation team’s goals and strategies by providing product, process, material, and construction innovations rooted in performance but including all areas of the business (running, cleated, sport lifestyle). These innovations should also align with inline category initiatives and marketing line plans to deliver successful and disruptively commercial product.

 

MEASURES OF SUCCESS:

  • Deliver innovative design solutions.
  • Manage project load and future innovation planning
  • Deliver high level presentations that push how design communicates ideas

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Reports to innovation design manager.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Minimum 5 years Industrial Design experience with innovation focus or 5 years performance footwear design experience.
  • BA or Master’s degree in Industrial Design, and/or Fashion design or related area. Innovation, Engineering Degree is a plus.
  • Proficient knowledge of graphics and design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketchbook
  • Solid experience with 3D modeling tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper and Modo
  • Knowledge and experience working with 3D printing technologies
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of ergonomics, biomechanics and engineering
  • Experience in athletic/outdoor products, technical footwear, or sport lifestyle products needed.
